What Tie is Best to Wear With a Navy Suit?

Navy blue suits are among the most common, and if you don’t already own one, you should consider adding one to your wardrobe. They can be used for formal or semi-formal dress codes, depending on how you style them. Moreover, navy suits can easily be paired with different color shirts and ties, creating endless combos.

If you aren’t sure how to wear your navy suit, you’ll want to read this blog post and perhaps save it for future reference. In it, we’ll share some of our favorite ways to style this suit color and help you create stylish and classy looks!

When to Choose a Navy Suit

One of the best things about navy suits is that they are quite versatile. The darker shades are generally considered appropriate for formal occasions and may even substitute a black suit at a black tie formal event. In fact, many people prefer dark blue tuxedos, believing they look better under artificial light.

Meanwhile, lighter shades of navy are popular in men’s fashion and more appropriate for casual looks. However, they are still very professional, especially when they are the classic fit or have a waistcoat.

No matter the shade of your navy suit, you can dress it up or down according to the color combinations and accessories you pick out. There’s also the option of pairing your suit pants with a blazer to create an even more casual look.

Tie Colors to Wear With Your Navy Suit

There are so many different shades on the color wheel, and surprisingly, a lot of them make good tie combinations with a navy suit. You can have fun trying out combinations with what you already have in your closet, but here are some of our favorites.

Simple Navy

There’s no reason to overcomplicate things — navy suits look great with a crisp white shirt and navy tie. This combination creates a monochrome look that’s classy and sleek. Other shades of blue ties could work too, but it is best to find one that’s similar to the shade of your suit, whether that’s royal blue or dark navy.

Your accessories should also match the elements of your suit so they don’t break up the look. For example, if your jacket has black buttons, you should choose onyx or gunmetal cufflinks that blend seamlessly with your outfit. As for shoes, we recommend black dress shoes if you want a monochrome look.

Crimson Red

If you want to stand out while sticking to a professional dress code, wear your dark blue suit with a red tie. Crimson red is our favorite shade because the pop of color creates a sharp contrast, especially with a white shirt. Red also draws more attention to you than any other color, making you appear confident and bold.

Other options in the same color family include maroon or burgundy ties, either of which would have a more subtle effect. However, you’ll find that they still contrast nicely with your navy suit, especially if you wear a white dress shirt.

Neutral Gray

Neutral gray ties are an attractive option, and since this is an unexpected combo, it’s bound to turn heads. You should keep in mind the shade of your navy suit when picking out a gray tie, trying to choose one that matches the tone of your suit. We recommend polishing your look with silver accessories, such as a tie bar or cufflinks.

Beachy Coral

While it may be a little bold for some people, coral ties are a fashionable choice and allow you to incorporate an unusual color tie in your closet. Once you see the look put together, you’ll likely realize that it is a lot more subtle than you imagined, similar to wearing a pink tie but with warmer tones. Feel free to wear gold accessories with this color combo.

Classic Black

Who says you need to wear a tuxedo to look dapper? This black tie and navy suit look is elegant and perfect for formal events, especially if the fabric of your suit is shiny. If you want to kick it up a notch, swap your traditional necktie for a black bow tie.

The most popular dress shirt color with this combination is white, but you can also pair it with a light blue or gray one, depending on the occasion.

Multi-Colored

You don’t have to stick with solid colors, but if you decide on multi-color neckties, it’s best to choose ones that have at least a touch of navy blue in them. For example, you may pick a navy and green tie with a white dress shirt. Another classic combo is a red and navy striped tie, which makes you look preppy and fashionable.

However, if you wear a colored dress shirt, your tie could match it instead. In this case, it wouldn’t necessarily need to have any navy in it. An example would be a light blue dress shirt with a light blue and purple tie.

Of course, these are just a couple of examples, and you can have a lot of fun mixing and matching shirt and tie colors. So, get creative and browse our shop for some inspiration!

Additional Tips for Styling Your Navy Suit

Once you have the best tie color picked out, you can decide whether to go with a solid color or a patterned tie. This aspect of your outfit will depend on whether you are trying to keep it formal or want to express your style with a polka dot or striped tie. Either way, you’ll find just the style you’re looking for in our collection of silk ties!

Another thing to consider is whether to choose a colored shirt. Most of the tie colors above look great with a plain white shirt, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun with your dress shirt. For example, your red tie combo would look great with a light blue shirt since it’s still neutral and the colors contrast.

It’s not too difficult to find a pair of dress shoes to match your navy suit — both black and brown shoes look great! Brown shoes stand out more, especially brogues or monk strap shoes. These styles are more formal and eye-catching. Meanwhile, black shoes, including loafers and oxford shoes, are classics that you can seamlessly incorporate into your look.

When it comes time to add the final touches, we recommend silver or gunmetal cufflinks and a matching pocket square.
