Expertly Style Men’s Zipper Ties: How To & Top Tips

What are Men’s Zipper Ties?

When you wear a suit and necktie, you want to look and feel like a million bucks. You can put a lot of attention into the details of your outfit, down to your accessories, but a poorly tied knot or crooked tie can quickly detract from the nicest of suits. Thankfully, if you aren’t a tie-tying master or just don’t want to spend time fiddling with your tie every day, there is a solution — zipper ties!

Some people look down on men’s zipper ties, but we’re here to tell you that having at least a couple in your closet is a great idea. Whether you miss your alarm in the morning and need to look presentable fast, need to put on a tie for a Zoom meeting, or just don’t feel well, zipper ties are a great alternative to the self-tie.

So, what is a zipper tie anyways? Basically, it’s a pre-tied tie that you can easily put on and take off. All you have to do is pull the loop away from the knot, and it opens. You can then slide your head through it and pull on the skinny end to tighten it again.

You never have to tie any knots or worry about them looking sloppy or disheveled as you go about your day, as is the case with clip-on ties. Plus, if you buy a high-quality zipper tie, you don’t have to worry about it loosening. The zippers are stiff enough that this won’t happen.

How Do You Tie a Zipper Tie?

Tying the zipper tie isn’t complicated. Unlike regular ties, there isn’t a list of steps you need to memorize. There’s also no room for mistakes. So, get your hands on a zipper tie and follow these easy instructions. Once you do it you’ll never need to read them again!

  1. Hold the zipper tie in one hand, grasping the knot. Place the other hand on the loop.
  2. Gently pull the neck loop away from the knot. Some zip ties with locks require an extra step here — just pull on each side of the loop, first the right and then the left. It should loosen up and start to expand.
  3. Put the loop over your head and under your collar.
  4. Now start pulling on the narrow end of the tie until the knot moves into position. Make sure it isn’t too tight — it should be comfortable to wear.

Now that you see how easy it is to wear a zipper tie, you understand why so many people like to keep them on hand. They make wearing a tie much less time-consuming!

Zipper neckties are also an ideal option for people with limited mobility, such as the elderly or those with disabilities. Because they aren’t difficult to maneuver, most people can put them on and take them off without much assistance, allowing them to get dressed independently

Because anyone can wear them, many grooms give their wedding party a necktie set that includes a zip-up tie. This ensures everyone has a neatly positioned tie in the wedding pictures and means you won’t have to wait for anyone to get their tie just right.

And, although people don’t often think about the wear and tear regular ties go through, knotting them eventually leads to creases or permanent marks. You don’t have to worry about this happening with zip-up ties because there is no tying involved!

Tips for Wearing Your Zipper Tie like a Seasoned Pro

Wearing a zipper tie is easy, but here are a few more tips that can help you look your best every time you put one on!

Double Check the Length

As you may know, the end of your necktie should rest just above the top of your belt buckle. With regular ties, the length has a lot to do with the knot you use, and if it’s not quite right, you can adjust it. With zip ties, there’s no way to shorten or lengthen your necktie. Thus, you’ll need to make sure you buy the right length. If you’re tall, you’ll need to get an extra-long zip tie.

If you’re shopping online, the product details should tell you which length is right for you according to your height. If not, make sure the company offers free returns, just in case it ends up being too short or long for you.

The best thing is that once you buy the right zipper tie, you won’t have to ever worry about the length ever again.

Hide the Loop

Another thing you should keep in mind when it comes to zipper ties is to hide the loop. Since it’s thinner than normal ties, this shouldn’t be a problem, but it is a bit of a give away that you’re wearing a zip tie. So, if you don’t want anyone to know, just make sure the loop is securely tucked under your dress shirt collar.

Style Like a Normal Tie

When it comes to styling your zipper tie, you can sport it just like you would any other tie. Choose fun patterns — such as paisley, plaid, or jacquard — or stick to the classics for business meetings, such as simple striped neckties.

If you just want to keep a couple of convenient options on hand, we recommend solid-color zipper ties. These will be easy to pair with just about any outfit when you need to put on a formal necktie in a pinch. Pair a navy blue or red zipper tie with a light-colored dress shirt, or try out a classic blue suit outfit using a black zipper tie.

Of course, you shouldn’t forget your accessories! Polish off your outfit with a matching pocket square, elegant cufflinks, or a tie bar.
